Kitchen Organizing Tips

Whether you have recently moved or are just feeling frustrated by your kitchen set-up, here are a few practical tips to get you going!

I’ve had the opportunity to work with several clients on organizing their kitchens and often pantries too. From these experiences, and organizing my own kitchen and pantry, I have a few tips that I live by! If this resonates, and you want to accomplish this but don’t have the time or energy to get it done - please reach out to me!

I WILL note that every kitchen & pantry are each so unique 🧡 but these tips can apply to most spaces!

For more photos of work that I’ve done, please check out my Instagram feed and Portfolio page. 🙌

TOP TIPS TO GET YOU STARTED:

  • Unfortunately, I truly rely on fully emptying cabinets and drawers! PULL IT ALL OUT. This can be a massive undertaking - so make sure you have plenty of time! You can start with the areas that are stressing you out the most, rather than all at once, BUT I tend to find a lot of items haphazardly put away, and once everything is out in the open you can: Group things. Make decisions - do I use this? Any of this duplicates or broken/trash? Anything I don’t love - do I need 20 mugs? Can I donate anything?

  • If you do the first bullet - and empty your drawers or cabinets - make sure to have cleaning supplies on hand! Wipe down & vacuum those areas before you put it all back in!! 😍

  • Before buying ANYTHING - measure, measure, measure! Knowing all the measurements of the drawers and cabinets is key to finding the right organizing solutions.

  • Keep large items together (see example in the pantry pic below). Every kitchen and pantry space is truly unique - but I tend to find that keeping similar sized items together, really helps you find what you’re looking for

  • Minimize the extra gadgets!

  • If you have lazy susans, I love using them for pantry items - I find that you can really fit a lot, and it’s easier to find smaller items.

  • Don’t feel pressure to condense and have labeled spice jars. I find that makes it harder to keep up with the expirations. But it IS pretty!

  • Do use drawer organizers - I’ll link to a few below - but I find that this helps everything stay in it’s place, including knives!

  • When putting items away in a cabinet, focus on maximizing the height of each shelf in a cabinet. Most cabinets allow you to move the shelves a bit - DO IT! You might be able to fit more than you think!

  • Do consider putting kids plates, bowls, cups at their level so they can help get what they need! This might mean a creative use of a lower drawer or cabinet - but try it out!

  • I personally DO like using clear containers for things like cereal, oats/grains, snacks that you buy in bulk and tend to buy on repeat — it helps you see how much you have left of something, and allows you to get rid of those boxes right away!

  • Do consider some kind of stacking method for your pots and pans that allows you to pull what you need, and not have to get them all out every time!
